What was the cross all about?

Follow MeI am starting to read the book “Follow Me” by Jan David Hettinga and in it he brings up some really good insights into the full meaning of the cross.

“Up until this moment you may have only seen the cross of Jesus Christ as God’s means of providing salvation from the guilt and consequences of your sin. You were partially right. At Calvary the legal requirements of divine justice were fully met by the blood sacrifice of Christ.

But as we have seen, God was after more than that salvaging our souls. He was providing the potential solution for our unwillingness to follow Him. Once and for all He revealed Himself to be the safe leader. That is, the One who will never trick us into trusting Him, then use and abuse us–then dump us and move on. He is the one safe leader because he has no ego entwined in His love for us. He does not need us to massage His ego, to support His public image or opinions.”

I have understood this, but how do you help others to see this truth. I came to this truth through a lot of study of the Bible, which yes we could get into the authority of scripture, but I have done that research and I trust what the Bible says is truth in light of the research that I have done. I follow God, I put my trust in God, some days fully and other days I have some serious problems doing so. The reason I follow God is because when He chose to come down to us in the form of Jesus Christ He did not force us to follow Him, He did not manipulate us by telling us what we wanted to hear. He came with truth and He died for that truth to be revealed. On the cross He showed what kind of leader He is. He loves us so much that He allowed us to crucify Him, He allowed us to abuse Him, the Creator of the universe, allowed us to whip Him, to sling curses at Him to show that He is a leader that we can trust. He is looking out for our good, for our potential, for our eternal souls and He will give us truth, but it is up to us to take that truth and use it. We are completely free to discard it, to trample it and He will not force us to love Him, but instead He is willing to die at our hands to show exactly how much He loves and to what extent He will go to prevent from forcing us to trust Him.
