WWDC 2006 Highlights

  • 17 million visitors to the Apple stores last quarter

  • Mac Pro (replaces the PowerMac) has been released
    • Same cheese grater case

  • Xserve
    • Similar to specs of Mac Pro
    • Built on Xeons – quad performance
    • 1U footprint still
    • Smaller chip footprint, easier to get faster chips in. 5x faster than the Xserve it replaced
    • More space and adds redundant power supply
    • Up to 5 TB of storage
    • Compared to the latest Dells, beats everything in the category, performance/price, etc $3,293 for a comparable Dell and $2,999 for the standard configuration for the Xserve.
  • Mac OS X
    • 19 million active OS X users
    • 86 Million lines of source code ported to run on Intel
    • There are now over 3000 Universal Binary apps (runs on both PPC and Intel processors)
    • Apple accuses Microsoft of copying OS X and they showed lots of screen shots of Tiger vs Vista and their similarities.

    • Can’t show too much since we do not want people to start copying us too early

      • completely compatible with 32 bit applications, 32 bit and 64 bit can run side by side without emulation, no translation, full support top to bottom
    • Time MachineTime Machine (Backups)
      • Only 26% of users back up in any way whatsoever
      • Most say they are just manually dragging files and folders to another drive to backup
      • Only 4% of users use an automated backup system
      • Leopard will change all that; Automatically backs up a mac, when you change a file it automatically backs it up, backs up photos, music, documents, files folder, everything, then you can restore everything
      • Backup to hard drive or server
      • Ever had time where you work on a doc and you do a save as and overwrote the wrong one?
        • With Time Machine you can get those files back by entering a date or time.
      • There is a visual representation of moving through time
        • Finder windows warp forward, grabs the file and then warps back in place in time
      • Great for Finder, but can also work with 3rd party applications as well
      • You can search for documents in the past
      • Works in iPhoto
        • You can find entire rolls of deleted photos back in time and then move them back to the backup system or the current time
      • Absolutely the best way to back up everything you have, store everything and find what you need that you thought you didn’t
    • A lot of new beta software will be included
      • Boot camp will ship with Leopard
        • 1/2 million downloads
      • Front Row (access to all your media from across the room sitting on your couch)
    • SpacesSpaces (Virtual Desktops)
      • Create different spaces for different clusters of Applications to work with
      • Can drag info from one desktop to the other
      • Spaces lets you create collections of applications for different tasks that are intuitive
    • Spotlight
      • You can now search other machines if you have permissions
      • Advanced search
        • Specify file type and other Developer requests will be added in Leopard
      • It will make a great application launcher now
      • Recent items will be added, prepopulated with recent stuff you’ve been doing.
    • More CORE Animations
      • Allows you to dramatically increase the production value of your applications.
      • Time Machine built on core animation
      • Thousands of layers, text, images, video, OpenGL, almost anything
      • Start space, goal space and keyframes
      • Core animation handles everything in between, color, size, opacity, all kinds of things.
    • Other Items
      • Rails support (Nice!)
      • Closed Captions for Quicktime
      • Better ways to navigation the system
      • Voiceover demo, text to speach (sounds like a real person reading), you can speed it up and voice is still clean and understandable
      • Apple Mail Enhancements
        • To-Do’s added
          • Select anything and make it a “To Do” item
          • Priorities, Alarms, etc
          • Can take any incoming mail message and turn it into a “To Do”, Checkbox on emails to create a “To Do”
          • Any application can contribute and create “To Do’s”
          • iCal is tied into it
          • One system wide To Do tracker
        • NotesNotes added
          • New special mailbox called “Notes” to keep them separated
          • Really easy to create Notes
        • StationariesStationaries added
          • Photos email would be great to apply stationary and have it look incredible in mail – industry standard html email, can send to anyone and will still look the same on the other end
          • Very easy to send Rich Mail
      • iCal enhancements
        • Post group’s calendar to the net
        • Share with your friends, family and colleagues can participate in managing the group’s events
        • Group Scheduling. View attendees’ availability before scheduling a meeting.
        • Auto scheduling will find the best time for everyone in the group
          Share documents, contacts, even video by simply dragging them into an event
        • Better API for developers
    • Dashboard
      • Over 2500 Widgets available
      • DashcodeFor developers – Dashcode, helps to design, develop and debug Dashboard Widgets
        • Templates, all the hard parts are done, just modify to produce widgets that you’re looking for, RSS, podcasts, etc
        • It is a great visual editor for CSS
        • Also chips with parts library – search fields, etc, drop into your widget and you’re done
        • Full javascript logger (debugger)
      • For Users
        • Web ClipWeb Clip: Way to turn any part of any web page into a widget
        • With 4 clicks you can create a widget for any webpage
    • iChat (Seriously Enhanced)
      • Multiple logins, Visibility, Animated icons, Video redorcing, and tabbed chats
      • iChat Theatre
        • Amazing real time effects
        • Show slides to family and friends, iPhoto slideshow that you can talk over
        • Can use Photobooth effects/filters with iChat
        • Can change your background to whatever you want. Step out of the picture, iChat takes a photo, then you can step back in and it will filter out your background, you can do photos or Video if you want.
